PLYMOUTH, WI - At approximately 3:45am August 9th a fire was reported at United Feed - a mill that produces feed for mink being raised for fur in the area. The fire caused a devestating $1.5 million worth of damages to the facility. By the time fire-fighters arrived on scene most of the structure of the three-story building had already been destroyed. About 30 truckloads of feed and one freezer were reported to have been salvaged from the fire, but another freezer, offices and the mill production facilities were all reported to have been destroyed in the blaze.
This fire was reported less than an hour afer a raid on a mink farm scarcely eight miles away. During this raid on the farm of Gene Meyer, close to 2,000 mink were released. Although many of the mink were reported to have been recaptured, the breeding history of the animals was lost, and the farm will be closing! Meyer stated "all my records are messed up now, I don't know who's mother is who.. ..we wait until they fur out and its history, I'm done. I'm not a quitter, but sooner or later you got to give up after you go through something like this."
A communique received from the A.L.F. described the actions:
In the early morning of August 8, 1999, We, the ALF entered Gene Myers Fur Farm in Plymouth, Wisconsin and opened every single cage on the property. Tears came to our eyes as we watched thousands of mink run to their freedom in nearby fields.
Once we had finished sweeping the farm, we headed off to United Feeds, which is the major feed supplier of this concentrated fur farming area. We entered the building and checked from top to bottom to ensure that no living thing was inside. After walking throughout the building and seeing the sick huge bins of animal innards and organs, we knew that we had to end this operation. Four incendiaries were strategically placed throughout the building, ensuring that it would burn to the ground.
We will not stop or be stopped until every cage is opened and every oppressed creature is free. 1999 will be a crippling year for this blood-soaked industry. This action is dedicated to our comrades on the run. You are not forgotten.
More to come...
